Zoo Summer Camp 2026

The Zoo Summer Camp 2026 began with great enthusiasm and energy. The camp was inaugurated by Smt. G. Mangamma, Curator of Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, in the presence of zoo officials.

Participants actively took part in the day's sessions, beginning with an engaging introduction to the zoo and its important role in wildlife conservation and education. To begin their journey, all participants were provided with a registration kit, setting the stage for an exciting and enriching camp experience.

The Treasure Hunt turned into an exciting adventure as children searched for hidden animal toys tucked beneath leaves, behind tree bark and scattered across the forest floor.

With every discovery, from tigers to rhinos, the children's excitement and curiosity grew. As they uncovered each animal, they also learned about its place of origin, making the activity both fun and educational.

Zoo Summer Camp

The exciting “Animal Investigators” session was conducted as part of the Zoo Summer Camp and was addressed by Mr. M. Purushottam, Conservation Biologist, Indira Gandhi Zoological Park.

The interactive session introduced participants to the world of animal clues, including tracks, droppings, feathers and animal calls. Through these clues, the participants learned how wildlife experts investigate animal behaviour, habitat use and conservation needs, making the session both informative and engaging.

International Day for Biological Diversity

On the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity, Indira Gandhi Zoological Park conducted a special Plant Giveaway Drive to promote awareness about the importance of biodiversity and the role of native flora in sustaining life.

A heartfelt thank you was extended to Mrs. M. Ishwarya, Founder of Terrace Garden, for her generous contribution of beautiful and healthy plants.

The plants were distributed among the enthusiastic participants of the Zoo Summer Camp, sparking meaningful conversations about plant care, biodiversity and the joy of growing green.

Day 2

Day 2 of the Zoo Summer Camp was filled with curiosity and excitement. The session began with “Nature’s Architects: Who Build Nests, Burrows and Hives”, delivered by Dr. Swapna Kota, Programme Manager, GVMC.

This was followed by an engaging session on “The Talking Tree: Secrets of Plants and Forests”, conducted by Ms. P. S. Akshata, Programme Associate, GVMC.

The day was highly interactive, with young participants exploring the fascinating world of trees, plant communication and the ways in which nature’s creatures build their unique homes. From the secrets of forests to the marvels of animal architecture, the sessions sparked wonder, curiosity and learning among the children.

Day 2 – Exploring Nature’s Architects

As part of the International Day of Biological Diversity celebrations, the young participants brought their creativity to life through a colourful art activity.

With brushes and colours in hand, the children expressed their understanding of biodiversity through paintings featuring birds, trees, animals and oceans. Working together in groups, they proudly shared their artwork, creating a joyful and colourful reminder of the incredible diversity of life that surrounds us.

Little eyes lit up with excitement during the “Spot the Difference” activity. From elephants swinging their trunks to birds in flight and giraffes stretching their necks, every movement sparked curiosity and joy among the young participants.

Learning about animal behaviour became a fun-filled interactive game, allowing the children to observe, compare and explore the wild world through engaging play.

Day 3

The “Animal Appetites” session, addressed by Ms. B. Divya, Zoo Education Officer, Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, gave participants an interesting insight into what animals eat and why.

From tiny birds to powerful carnivores, gentle herbivores and adaptable omnivores, the session explored the unique diets of different animal species. Participants also learned how the food provided to each animal is carefully selected based on its natural feeding habits and nutritional requirements.

Day 3 – Animal Appetites

Our Little Zoo Vets from the Summer Camp had an exciting and educational day exploring the veterinary world of Indira Gandhi Zoological Park.

Addressed by Dr. P. Bhanu, Senior Veterinarian, the children explored the veterinary facilities, from the outpatient ward to the operation theatre, gaining firsthand insight into animal healthcare.

They visited the veterinary hospital, observed preserved specimens and were introduced to veterinary tools such as the blow pipe and techniques used for animal tranquillization.

The session provided a fascinating glimpse into the treatment and care of zoo animals while inspiring young minds to understand and appreciate the vital role of veterinary science in wildlife conservation.

Day 4

From learning about birds to observing them in their natural habitats, the young participants of the Zoo Summer Camp explored the fascinating world of birdwatching.

The session was led by Mr. Vivek N. Rathod, Board Member of WCTRE and avian enthusiast. The children explored different bird species across the Zoo and counted nests perched high on the majestic Great Banyan Tree, where they spotted several Painted Stork nests.

They also observed bird activity within the Rhino enclosure, gaining a closer understanding of birds and their habitats.

The session beautifully connected curiosity with conservation, leaving the young campers more aware of and appreciative of the diverse birdlife around them.

Day 4 – Birdwatching: Exploring Our Feathered Friends

The final day of the Zoo Summer Camp focused on the importance of making eco-friendly choices and adopting sustainable lifestyles to create a better future for our planet.

The session was addressed by Ms. Namitha Tarai, Assistant Project Manager, Green Waves, who highlighted how our everyday choices can contribute to environmental conservation.

Participants learned about simple yet meaningful practices such as:

  • Carrying reusable bags
  • Conserving water
  • Using public transport
  • Reducing plastic usage
  • Composting kitchen waste
  • Supporting local and sustainable products

By adopting these green practices in our daily lives, we can reduce our ecological footprint and inspire others to follow the path of sustainability. The session highlighted that small, consistent actions can lead to meaningful change.

Day 5 – Eco-Friendly Choices & Sustainable Living

Zoo Summer Camp Valedictory

The Zoo’s Summer Camp offered children enriching learning experiences centred around wildlife, nature and conservation. Through hands-on activities and interactions with experts, the young participants gained valuable knowledge, experiences and lasting appreciation for the natural world.

To celebrate their enthusiastic participation and completion of the Summer Camp, each child received an appreciation certificate from Smt. G. Mangamma, Curator, Indira Gandhi Zoological Park.

The valedictory programme marked the conclusion of an exciting and educational journey, celebrating the children's curiosity, participation and enthusiasm throughout the camp.
