About Zoo

Established in the year 1972, the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park at Visakhapatnam is one of the naturalistic zoos in the country. Open to public on 19.05.1977, this modern zoo is known for its spacious enclosures and green surroundings. Popularly known as Vizag Zoo, it is also the third largest zoo in the country in terms of area. Every year the zoo witnesses an increase in tourism and educational visits. People from nook and corner of the world come to IGZP and enjoy by observing the variety of animals in its enclosures and free range.

Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is located amidst Seethakonda Reserve Forest in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Declared open to the public on 19th May 1977, covers an area of 625 acres and situated between the beautiful scenic Eastern Ghats on three sides and Bay of Bengal on the fourth side. 87 species of animals numbering to 835, lesser carnivores, small mammals, reptiles, ungulates and birds are housed in natural ambiance. The unusual noteworthy facet of Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is its free ranging animal species presence between two beautiful hillocks within the premises of the park. The park has a large number of rare endemic and exotic trees and shrubs. Water bodies flowing into the park from adjoining Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary are good source of water for the sustenance of various flora and fauna in the zoo park.
